3 weeks with the iPhone
The first month with any new device is like a honeymoon, and depending on the device and its quirks, it may lead to a quick annulment. This is a quick post overview of my experience so far with my iPhone.
1. EDGE Network - Having migrated from a Nokia e61 unlocked Quad Band with EDGE network to the iPhone, I knew exactly what the EDGE network would be like, so no issues there for sure. It does seem a little snappier than the e61 when downloading web pages, but of course lack of Flash is a large annoyance for sure.
2. Battery - In the past 3 weeks, I have used the phone constantly. I do enjoy having an all in one device for sure, but if you do not have battery charger in your car and in more than one location in your house or office, then you will suck the battery dry if you leave Bluetooth and Wifi on and play videos. I have learned to turn off WiFi when I am not using it, and since I have decided NOT to use Bluetooth for now, I now have Bluetooth off as well. If I am at one of the computers I plug in immediately to top off. I hope the topping off wont degrade things in the long run.
3. Music - The Nokia e61 MP3 player was just "ok" to use, very bad interface and controls, but nonetheless I could play MP3s, and play it through my Bluetooth headset. On the iPhone that has all changed. Of course I own video iPods as well, but having to carry around more devices can be a problem. The only issues with the iPod functionality is that battery drain when watching videos, and the temptation to watch something like South Park or Diggnation while driving (NO I DO NOT DO THIS, I am just saying it is a temptation)
4. Keyboard - I have taken the words of wisdom I heard, just give in to the keyboard. It does a really good job of correcting as you go, and my fingers have gotten accustomed to it. Of course the feel of the e61 keyboard made it easy to do one handed typing, while driving, but I dont do that, as it is unsafe.
5. Mail - this is where things really seem to break down on the iPhone. I have numerous email accounts, and I have found that attachments (.eml or mime) can not be opended. In addition, my VoIP providers send me an .wav file of voicemails, guess what, it cant be opened. Also, the interface to get to emails is tedious at best. Multiple clicks to get to mail in the inbox, not good. Mail should work as close as possible to Mail.app There should be a unified Inbox. Of course the e61 had Blackberry service and multiple POP accounts on it, and there was a different email box for each.
6. "Wow is that an iPhone?" - OK I never thought this was true, but in the past few days it seems every time I use the phone, or place it on a table at a meeting, I get the "wow is that an iPhone, can I see it?"
So, in conclusion, I think this was a great marriage between the iPhone and me. Of course like all marriages there will be disagreements on how to accomplish things, but things should be ok. Of course I think this is a marriage of convenience mostly for now, until iPhone 2.0 will come out and I have to divorce iPhone 1.0, but we will have a great time until then, and have some fond memories to share.
