Job Change -> Small Business Owner

For a few weeks now, I have been kept busy in completing out my tour of time at my soon to be ex-employer, and in the evenings and spare time, trying to start a company.

Today marks the end of my time at one company, and the start of my new role as Managing Partner at Milton Security Group LLC. There are only 3 of us now, but should have a couple of openings (hardware engineer and a sales position) hopefully soon.

Milton Security will be concentrating on two paths currently, one is to help customers with their current problems as it relates to security. This is done through assessments and gap analysis. The other path is to learn from all of the customers, and the marketplace, what void there is that needs to be filled with the current types of hardware security devices out there now, and if Milton Security could fill that void. Through ongoing discussions, I hope that we can learn enough about what customers really need, not what others think they need (lots of listening !), and then trying to help fill that real need.

Of course the bread and butter is services. So if you are in need of any help, don't hesitate to click through here -> Network and security services.

It is a very exciting time for us and of course my family. Starting anything from scratch can be quite nerve wracking, and it is a leap, of some sort. The good side is Milton already has contracts (with very wet ink) so we wont be out on the street :-)

iPhone Activation second thoughts

OK, I thought about this all day, and after reading this TUAW posting, and comments, I added my 2cents to the comments there:

OK, here is another way of looking at it:

ATT activations in 30 hours - 146,000

Average number per hour - 4,866.67

Now to find what the REAL number is for 2 FULL days of activations:

4,866.67 x 48 = 233,600

Now, if you really go out on a huge limb and extrapolate, you could say that in the first 5 days ATT would have activated 584,000

hahaha

iPhone disappoints wall street - ATT activations are 146,000 for the first 2 days

Reuters is reporting that ATT only activated 146,000 iPhone's in the first 48 hours. This is a large difference between what was rumored to have been sold (yes just rumors) and actual fact.

Of course you could say that the whole iPhone activation fiasco (some people did not get their iPhone activated until after the first 48 hour period) may have played into this.

This has sent AAPL and ATT stock down a bit in trading today.

My take on this is due to the iPhone activation issue, not all purchased phones were able to be activated. I think we need to wait until Apple reports on their quarter to see how many units they actually sold, since from the Reuters article, ATT only reported activations, not units sold?

3 weeks with the iPhone

The first month with any new device is like a honeymoon, and depending on the device and its quirks, it may lead to a quick annulment. This is a quick post overview of my experience so far with my iPhone.

1. EDGE Network - Having migrated from a Nokia e61 unlocked Quad Band with EDGE network to the iPhone, I knew exactly what the EDGE network would be like, so no issues there for sure. It does seem a little snappier than the e61 when downloading web pages, but of course lack of Flash is a large annoyance for sure.

2. Battery - In the past 3 weeks, I have used the phone constantly. I do enjoy having an all in one device for sure, but if you do not have battery charger in your car and in more than one location in your house or office, then you will suck the battery dry if you leave Bluetooth and Wifi on and play videos. I have learned to turn off WiFi when I am not using it, and since I have decided NOT to use Bluetooth for now, I now have Bluetooth off as well. If I am at one of the computers I plug in immediately to top off. I hope the topping off wont degrade things in the long run.

3. Music - The Nokia e61 MP3 player was just "ok" to use, very bad interface and controls, but nonetheless I could play MP3s, and play it through my Bluetooth headset. On the iPhone that has all changed. Of course I own video iPods as well, but having to carry around more devices can be a problem. The only issues with the iPod functionality is that battery drain when watching videos, and the temptation to watch something like South Park or Diggnation while driving (NO I DO NOT DO THIS, I am just saying it is a temptation)

4. Keyboard - I have taken the words of wisdom I heard, just give in to the keyboard. It does a really good job of correcting as you go, and my fingers have gotten accustomed to it. Of course the feel of the e61 keyboard made it easy to do one handed typing, while driving, but I dont do that, as it is unsafe.

5. Mail - this is where things really seem to break down on the iPhone. I have numerous email accounts, and I have found that attachments (.eml or mime) can not be opended. In addition, my VoIP providers send me an .wav file of voicemails, guess what, it cant be opened. Also, the interface to get to emails is tedious at best. Multiple clicks to get to mail in the inbox, not good. Mail should work as close as possible to Mail.app There should be a unified Inbox. Of course the e61 had Blackberry service and multiple POP accounts on it, and there was a different email box for each.

6. "Wow is that an iPhone?" - OK I never thought this was true, but in the past few days it seems every time I use the phone, or place it on a table at a meeting, I get the "wow is that an iPhone, can I see it?"

So, in conclusion, I think this was a great marriage between the iPhone and me. Of course like all marriages there will be disagreements on how to accomplish things, but things should be ok. Of course I think this is a marriage of convenience mostly for now, until iPhone 2.0 will come out and I have to divorce iPhone 1.0, but we will have a great time until then, and have some fond memories to share.

MacBook Pro Fan (part two) and update on me

A couple of weeks ago I took my MBP into the Apple store for them to take a look at the left side fan. They held the unit over the weekend, under the guise of doing a complete 24 hour testing. I called and emailed on Monday, and was notified by them via email that I could pick up the unit. When I arrived, it turns out they had not run the diagnostic testing, they had popped open the case, put a new fan in, then closed it, then booted it once, all within 15 minutes of my arrival. How do I know this? by using a fancy command in terminal called ' last ' This wonderful command shows the last logins, reboots and shutdowns. Comes in handy in cases like this. So, I questioned how dependable of a repair it would be if they had not done any testing. The Genii did not know of the ' last ' command for sure, he had to go get the technician who did the repair. The technician I talked with admitted that they don't do testing like that if they know what the problem is, and in this case, a fan replacement can be done in less than 16 minutes. I was aghast of course to learn that the Genii and Senior Asst Manager who I spoke with the week before would even tell people that they do testing and diagnoses before doing repairs, when in fact they do not....hmmmm...I wont let it get to me, it could be worse.....I think. So far the unit does in fact fine.

Its has been a busy couple of weeks for sure. With my work coming to a close at my current place, and the travelling I had done, and all of the items on the "Honey - do" list being checked off, (family still in Europe until mid August) I have kept pretty busy. A friend came up last weekend and helped put in some flooring with me for one of my daughters rooms, and a attic fan (it does get hot in the OC ! ) I am planning on going to DEFCON again this year, so I am looking for a place to stay that is reasonably priced and not a scary place to sleep in.

Today is the day I rearrange the home office (happens every three months). Organizing all of the equipment, books, paperwork, etc can be a chore to say the least. I need like another 11x11 room ...hmmm something to think about I guess.

MacBook Pro in for Repairs

Well, I took my MacBook Pro in for repairs last Thursday. I met with the manager of the Apple Store at Brea mall as well to explain had the technician replaced the left side fan in May 2007 when he replcaed the rigth fan, I wouldnt be there with a dead fan, and asking for expedited service.

The manager explained that even though I had Pro Care (very useful) there was about 6 systems in front of me, with Pro Care, that needed to be worked on, and they were backed up due to the iPhone release (huh?, technicians who repair computers work the floor selling???)

The manager said she would call me on Sunday (today) to give me an update. Its now 8:00pm, and no phone call. I see the store really lives up to its promises so far....

I am hoping that they call tomorrow, as I need the system before Tuesday.

SSH for iPhone !!!!

As a packet jockey, who likes to play with cool toys, I was really in need of a SSH capability on my new pretty iPhone. Digging through Google Code, I found what I was looking for in the form of web-shell, and after playing with WebShell 0.2.0 for an hour or so, I got it to work.

(as an aside, Secure Shell (SSH) is used to login interactively to a remote system. WebShell, a small python application, is run on the system you want to SSH into.)

Following the instructions on the Google Code page for web-shell, modifying apache to accept HTTPS, and modifying the python file to accept requests from hosts other than localhost (so a real IP of the local Mac the script is running on) I was able to attach via EDGE network to a MacBook Pro (behind a firewall) and gain access to a SSH session. From there I was able to run lynx.

Next steps for me, irc in the ssh session......

I never noticed this before today. I was looking to see how much Pro Care costs, and if it was worth it. When I typed in Pro into the search box on Apple's website, it reacted like Spotlight and started showing me results without hitting enter.

Someone else has probably seen this, but I had not, and thought it was nice feature.

iPhone Updates, are they coming?

As i sit next to my iPhone, I am in awe of its simple lines. Reading all the information online, I see that people love this phone so much, that somewhere around 40 to 50% of the locations are out of stock.

There are a lot of little things that would be nice to have, features like video recording or MMS come to mind. But if you were Steve Jobs, how would you plot out the feature set of the iPhone. Would you release everything on the same day or would you stagger them across the next 3 months?

I think Mr Jobs has come up with a plan to stagger the releases. This ensures that there is a follow on wave of sales of the iPhone. Each new "cool" feature added, means more potential purchases of the iPhone, and keeps the iPhone in the media limelight.

Now the question is when to release the updates, every week, every month, every quarter? I think he is waiting to decide on that based on sales figures. the moment the rate of iPhone sales starts to dip, introduce a new feature that will "wow" them again.

It follows the "One more thing" theme........

After upgrading my collection of PBs, MBs and MBPs from small drives (40, 60 and 100 gig drives) to larger drives (100+ each) I find that I have a small collection of leftover drives. One idea is to buy a Drobo and adapters to put these drives into an array.

Any other ideas?

As can be seen here, both dogs are still not very interested in the iPhone. They are quite annoyed by me hovering over them and taking pictures, and it is hot

Its 85 degrees in the home office, I am trying to conserve electricity, don't want repeat of last year in July when my electric bill was $983 for one month.

I got this for my iPhone. Fits very nicely, and is not heavy. I am paranoid of dropping the phone putting in and taking it.
